The UK and US have hammered out a significant trade agreement that will guarantee zero import taxes on UK medicine products being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has committed to boost funding on drugs through the National Health Service (NHS). This commitment ensures that duties on these vital products will be held at nothing for a timeframe of three years.

This development comes after earlier warnings to significantly raise import taxes on patented drug products, with increases mentioned reaching double the cost.

"This agreement between the Britain strengthens the international landscape for new treatments and introduces much-needed equity to U.S.–U.K. drug exports," a statement noted.

Economic Importance

Pharmaceuticals constitute one of the Britain's largest export categories to the America, which is easily the biggest destination for large companies like GSK and AstraZeneca.

Statistics show that in the one-year period prior to last September, the UK sold pharmaceutical products totaling over eleven billion pounds to the US. This value accounted for 17.4% of total UK exports in that span.

"This deal secures work, boosts funding and paves the way for the UK to establish itself as a global hub for biotech and pharma," a minister remarked.

Key UK Commitments

The deal includes several notable pledges from the United Kingdom:

  • Price Threshold Increase: The UK will increase the affordability limit at which it considers new therapies to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to increase total NHS spending on treatments from 0.3 percent of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the next decade.
  • Payback Limit: The sum pharmaceutical firms must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be limited at 15%. Previously, refunds were more than twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

This agreement takes place against a protracted dispute between the sector and the UK government over drug pricing and NHS adoption.

The disagreement were intensified by assertions that American consumers were charged significantly more for the equivalent treatments than patients in the UK and Europe.

Over the last 18 months, several large pharmaceutical investments in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while substantial funding commitments have been announced toward American operations.

The Science Minister publicly accepted that the NHS must spend more on medicines, noting that its expenditure on drugs had shrunk as a proportion of its total funding over the last ten years.
